The Work That Determines a Bookkeeping Catch Up Timeline

The time required depends on the number of unfinished months, transaction volume, account count and quality of the available records. A meaningful timeline follows a review of those factors. The age of the backlog alone does not show how much work is involved.

Volume and condition are different

Six months with one bank account and organized receipts can require less effort than two months involving multiple cards, cash sales and several payment platforms. Existing duplicates, incorrect opening balances or prior incomplete repairs add investigation work. Missing statements can delay progress even when the transaction count is low.

Understand the sequence of the work

The project normally begins with record collection and a supported starting point. Transactions are then organized, unclear items resolved and accounts reconciled in sequence. Reports are reviewed after the underlying activity is dependable. If older errors carry forward, later months cannot be considered complete simply because their transactions have been imported.

Ask for milestones you can recognize

Useful milestones include records received, first period reconciled, open questions returned and final reports delivered. Agree on the owner’s response time and identify any tax or financing deadline early. A responsible estimate also explains what could change it, such as discovering an unrecorded account. Paper Trail can begin with your last completed month, software and approximate account count before requesting the records needed to define the project.
