Finish Year End Cleanup After December
Yes, for a business with a December year end, cleanup can continue after December as final statements, supplier bills and other records become available. Completing the work later does not move transactions into a different year. The accounting method and underlying facts determine the appropriate period.
Keep the period and payment dates visible
A supplier bill dated in December but paid in January may be treated differently under cash and accrual methods. An invoice date alone does not resolve every timing question. Retain the service period, payment date and supporting document so the tax professional can evaluate any year boundary issues.
Close the gaps deliberately
Reconcile all year end bank and credit card statements, review outstanding customer invoices and supplier bills, and identify equipment, loans and owner activity. Check that late arriving records have not been entered twice. A final bank statement may also reveal fees, interest or a payment that had not reached the books.
Agree on the tax preparation handoff
Set a document deadline and distinguish completed work from open questions. Save the final reports used by the tax preparer, along with any later approved adjustments. Cleanup does not extend tax filing or payment deadlines. If timing is tight, coordinate the unresolved items with the tax professional instead of assuming a bookkeeping project automatically changes those obligations.
