Bank Feeds and Reconciliation Do Different Jobs

No, a bank feed imports transactions but does not replace reconciliation. Reconciliation compares your recorded activity with a statement for a specific closing date and explains differences. A connected feed can still contain missing, duplicated or incorrectly matched transactions.

What an automatic connection cannot prove

A downloaded transaction may match an expense already entered from a receipt, or it may create a second expense if accepted incorrectly. A connection can also stop working before you notice. Seeing transactions on a screen does not establish that every transaction for the statement period is present or recorded once.

A useful way to understand the difference

Imagine your statement shows a $450 supplier payment. You entered the supplier bill and payment manually, then accepted a downloaded withdrawal as a new expense. The bank is correct, but the books now show two payments. Comparing the statement against the register helps identify the extra entry and its effect on the balance.

Keep a closing record

Match the statement starting balance, review deposits and withdrawals, record legitimate fees and explain outstanding items. Save the reconciliation report with the statement after the difference is resolved. A zero difference created with an unexplained adjustment is not reliable evidence that the books are correct. The IRS describes monthly checking account reconciliation as a way to verify cash and identify errors.
